Sustainable Tourism in Tenerife

We often hear talking about sustainability for everything, but what is sustainable tourism in Tenerife?

First, let’s see what sustainable means according to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language (RAE):

Sustainable

1. adj. That can be sustained. Opinion, sustainable situation.

2. adj. Especially in ecology and economics, that to you can maintain during length time without exhaust theresources o cause serious damage at medium environment. Development, sustainable economy.

Secondly, if we consult the World Tourism Organization it defines us:

Sustainable tourism

“Tourism that takes full account of current and future economic, social and environmental impacts to meet the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Because of this, we can see a diversity of options to practice sustainable tourism in Tenerife.

From Tazirga we promote activities in connection with nature and society.

Environmental sustainability in Tenerife

Initially, Tazirga was born with the objective of spreading the word about natural resources. The main purpose is, in addition to the leisure and enjoyment of the experience, is to love them. Because when someone knows the importance of an environment, that is the moment when they begin to protect it.

From all our Wellness Experiences you can learn about our environment in a sustainable way. As environmental educators it is our job to help you learn about the nature that surrounds us. Its role in the community. And the implication of its preservation.

Sustainable mobility in Tenerife

For this reason we promote routes taking advantage of the island’s public transportation. This reduces the number of vehicles and the pollution generated by them. From the website of TITSA (Transporte Interurbano de Tenerife, Sociedad Anónima) you can check the schedules and lines of the island of Tenerife.

The route of “Ellas entre lino y vino” starts at the bus station of La Laguna.

The route of “Ellas y los altos de Tenerife” begins with the arrival of the bus to Vilaflor from Los Cristianos.

Sustainable community in Tenerife

In addition, almost all of our routes offer the possibility to interact with the local population:

  • There is always the option of eating local food in family restaurants.
  • Visit to farms to learn about organic and traditional agriculture
  • We know cheese dairies, wineries, bakeries, etc. that continue to pass on their traditions.
  • Craftswomen explain their work while maintaining their culture

“Think global, act local”.

Finally, it is always up to you to collaborate with these communities. Involvement in sustainability is a joint task. Because with small contributions, we achieve great actions.
