Tenerife: Discover the Hidden Treasure of its Whale Patrimony

Tenerife, an island that captivates with its picturesque landscapes and rich marine history, is home to a little-known but highly valuable treasure: its whale heritage. Although attention has long been focused on the lush biodiversity of its waters and stunning volcanic geography, the presence of these majestic marine mammals has been a vital but often overlooked component of the island’s identity. In this article, we will dive into the depths of Tenerife’s whale heritage, exploring its historical importance, its influence on local culture and its role in the region’s marine ecosystem.

A bit of history

The maritime area between Tenerife and La Gomera has been declared a World Whale Heritage Site. It extends from the southwest coast of Tenerife to the northeast coast of La Gomera. This area was previously protected by other protected areas such as the Teno-Rasca Coastal Strip SCI.

This makes the Canary Islands the first area in Europe to receive this classification, and the third in the world, together with Herver Bay (Australia) and The Bluff (South Africa). The International Cetacean Alliance gives the qualification of Tenerife Whale Heritage only to world destinations that comply with certain particularities such as those we perceive in this area:

  • Sustainable sightings
  • Presence of a varied number of cetaceans (more than 30 species of the 90 existing species).
  • Resident community of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins
  • Migration route of other species

The efforts made by all the people and entities involved in this natural activity have borne fruit in terms of protection.
