Understanding Accessible Tourism
Accessible tourism, as defined by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), is the collaboration of individuals and stakeholders that enables people with special needs (in all areas, mobility, vision, hearing, cognitive, visceral, etc.) to live independently, with equality and dignity, thanks to a wide range of tourism services, products and environments designed in a universal way.
Tazirga’s Commitment to Accessible Tourism
Tazirga, a leading provider of accessible tourism experiences in Tenerife, is dedicated to creating inclusive and enjoyable adventures for people of all abilities. With a team of experienced professionals and a passion for accessibility, Tazirga offers a wide range of tailored activities and services to cater to the diverse needs of its guests.
Rut Gomez: A Pioneer in Inclusion
Rut Gomez, the founder of Tazirga, holds a deep-rooted passion for accessible tourism. Her journey began in the world of scuba diving, where she pursued training with Disabled Divers International through Rivemar (Murcia), earning her certification as an adapted diving instructor. Over the years, Rut’s expertise expanded, leading her to provide training to:
- Diving professionals
- Therapists from various fields (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychotherapy, etc.)
- Family members and assistants to accompany leisure activities both in and out of the water
- Hospitality professionals to adapt their facilities
Rut’s dedication to adapted tourism has been recognized through her accreditation as an Instructor Trainer by Disabled Divers International in 2013, becoming their representative for Panama and Central America. In 2023, she further enhanced her expertise by obtaining the ACCESSCULT certification: “Accessible cultural heritage for all.”
Tazirga’s Extensive Experience in Accessible Tourism
Tazirga’s involvement in accessibility in Tenerife dates back to 2011. In 2013, Rut Gomez established Turismo Accesible Panamá, promoting and training for inclusive leisure in Panama, training personnel in various sectors, water-based injury recovery, and universal accessibility in urban and coastal areas.
Tazirga has had the privilege of serving individuals with diverse needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), reduced mobility, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and more. Through each interaction, Tazirga has continuously learned and grown, fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
A Heartfelt Gratitude
Tazirga expresses its deepest gratitude to all those who have supported its mission, particularly Elena Prous, who placed her trust in the company for her travels to Tenerife, Panama, and Mexico.
